Distraction Scams

In a recent report out of Montreal, they warn of a new scam targeting seniors. It is being reported all across Canada. The scam is taking jewelry from unsuspecting and distracted seniors.

How The Scam Works

The scam works by using a ruse to engage the would-be victim. It usually involves a small group of people who are the scammers. The ruse can be asking for directions for example. When they have provided the help, the scammer then offers the victim some cheap worthless jewelry as a thank you. They encourage the victim to put it on. While the victim is doing this and is distracted, the scammer removes real jewelry from the victim. Then the scammers disperse.

Reports All Across Canada

This scam has risen in recent months all across Canada. There have been reports in Ottawa, Toronto, and Vancouver to name a few.

Always Be Careful and Vigilant

The trick to not falling victim to this scam is to always be cautious. Be on guard when dealing with strangers. This is a tough one because of our naturally trusting nature and our desire to be helpful. But these scams are counting on you doing exactly that.
